The Sơn Trà Peninsula sits northeast of Da Nang city, a green ridge that runs out into the sea and ends in a road that climbs through forest. In the morning it is the best half day in the city: cool air, wide water views, a working pagoda and a very good chance of seeing monkeys. This plan keeps it simple, so you can be back at the beach, or at the table, before the day gets hot.
Why the morning is the right window
Sơn Trà is a mountain, and the road up is exposed. Going early does three things for you: the air is cooler, the light on the bay is cleaner for photos, and the coach groups that arrive mid morning are still in the city. Aim to be on the road by 06:00 to 07:00, especially in the warmer months. In November, mornings can bring cloud or passing rain, so check the forecast before you set out and keep the plan flexible. Our guide to Da Nang in November covers what that month usually looks like.
Getting there: bike, taxi or Grab
The peninsula starts just across the river from the city centre, and the road to Linh Ứng Pagoda is straightforward. Most travellers use a Grab car or scooter, or rent a scooter if they are confident riders. The climb is gentle enough for a small scooter, but the road bends and has traffic in places, so ride slowly and stay on your side. If you take a car, agree a rough pickup time with the driver, because getting a ride back from the upper viewpoints can take a while.
Linh Ứng Pagoda and the Lady Buddha
This is the anchor of the morning. The pagoda grounds are free to enter and open early, with a large courtyard, bonsai, and the tall white statue of the Lady Buddha facing the sea. It is a place of worship as well as a landmark, so dress respectfully: shoulders and knees covered, voices low inside the halls. Walk the courtyard first, then the statue, then the smaller shrines. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, more if you like photography. Check locally for any changes to opening hours around festivals.
The viewpoint stops on the way up
Past the pagoda, the road continues up the peninsula with several places to pull over and look back at the city and My Khe Beach. The classic stop is the bend with the wide view over the bay, where you can see the curve of the beach and the city skyline behind it. Further on, the road narrows and the forest closes in. Take your time, park well off the road, and do not stop in the middle of a blind corner. If you are building a fuller day, this pairs well with our 1 day Da Nang itinerary.
Monkeys, and how to behave
The peninsula is home to red shanked douc langurs and macaques, and morning is when they are most active. You may see them on the road or in the trees near the viewpoints. Keep your distance, keep food and drinks out of sight, and never feed them. They are wild animals and they will take a bag if it looks interesting. Do not block the road to take a photo.
Coming back down, and what to do next
Ride back the same way, and expect the city to be fully awake by the time you reach the river. A common and very good plan is to head straight for My Khe Beach for a swim, then eat. If you want to understand the beach itself, flags and all, read our My Khe Beach guide. For a slower morning that starts with a swim and ends with coffee and eggs, see breakfast near My Khe Beach.
Practical notes for the ride
- Fuel up before you cross the river. There are petrol stations on the city side.
- Cash for small stops, parking and drinks. Not every kiosk takes cards.
- Sun protection even at 07:00: the road is exposed on the way down.
- Shoes with grip, because the pagoda steps and viewpoints are uneven.
- Rain: if it is raining hard, the upper road is not worth it. The pagoda alone still works in light rain.
Breakfast after the peninsula, at Oh la la!
Oh la la! sits at 64A Mai Thúc Lân in An Thượng, a short walk inland from My Khe Beach, roughly ten minutes on foot. It opens every day, usually 08:00 to 18:00, which lines up neatly with a ride back from Sơn Trà. The Breakfast Combo is 99,000 VND, toast and a fresh juice of your choice, served 08:00 to 10:30 only. The Avocado Eggs Benedict is 130,000 VND and the English Breakfast is 145,000 VND. Coffee comes first when the terrace is full, and brunch takes about 15 to 20 minutes at busy times. Pay by cash or QR bank transfer. Minh, the owner, comes to the tables and sometimes sends over coconut chips, and after the meal you can ask for a ticket and spin the prize wheel, where every spin wins something. Find the menu at /#menu, the latest on Instagram, or the location on Google Maps. If you are still deciding where to eat, our best breakfast in Da Nang guide and the An Thượng guide will help you plan the rest of the morning.
