Da Nang rewards an early start. The beach is best at sunrise, the sights are cooler before ten, and the afternoon heat is made for a long lunch and a nap. This itinerary leans into that rhythm: big mornings, slow middays, bright evenings.
Before you go
- Where to stay: An Thượng or anywhere along My Khe Beach. You can walk to the sand, to breakfast and to dinner. See our An Thượng guide.
- Getting around: Grab cars and motorbikes are quick, cheap and everywhere. Only rent a scooter if you are licensed and experienced.
- Money: carry some cash for street food and markets. Many cafés also take QR bank transfer.
- Season: January to August is mostly dry. September to December is the rainy season, so keep a backup plan.
Day 1: beach, An Thượng and the Dragon Bridge
Morning. Sunrise swim at My Khe, in the lifeguard zone. Then walk ten minutes inland for breakfast in An Thượng. Our breakfast near My Khe Beach guide has the full plan. At Oh la la!, the Breakfast Combo (toast and fresh juice, 99,000 VND) runs until 10:30, and the Avocado Eggs Benedict (130,000 VND) is the house favorite.
Midday. Rest. Seriously. The heat between noon and 15:00 is real.
Afternoon. Back to the beach for the golden hour, or walk along the Han River.
Evening. The Dragon Bridge (Cầu Rồng) breathes fire and then water on Saturday and Sunday nights, usually at 21:00. Watch from the riverbank near the bridge, and arrive early for a good spot. Times can change on holidays, so check locally. On a weekday, browse the Sơn Trà Night Market near the bridge's eastern end instead.
Day 2: Marble Mountains and Hội An
Morning. Go to the Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn) early, before the heat and the tour buses. Thủy Sơn, the largest of the five hills, has caves, pagodas and viewpoints over the coast. Huyền Không Cave, with light falling through the rock ceiling, is the highlight. There is an elevator partway up if you want to save the stairs. At the foot, the Non Nước stone-carving village is worth a slow walk.
Afternoon. Continue south to Hội An, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by car from the Marble Mountains. The Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, full of yellow merchant houses, temples and the Japanese Covered Bridge. A ticket is required for the old town's heritage sights.
Evening. Stay for dusk, when the lanterns come on and the boats on the Thu Bồn River launch paper lanterns onto the water. Ride back to Da Nang by Grab.
Day 3: Sơn Trà Peninsula and the city
Morning. Head up to Sơn Trà Peninsula, the green mountain at the north end of My Khe. Linh Ứng Pagoda and its 67 meter Lady Buddha look out over the whole bay. If you are lucky, you might spot red-shanked douc langurs in the forest. The roads are steep and winding, so a Grab car is safer than a rented scooter.
Afternoon. Back in the city: the Museum of Cham Sculpture by the river, the pink Da Nang Cathedral, and Han Market for coffee beans, dried fruit and souvenirs.
Evening. Seafood on the beach road. Choose from the tanks, and always ask the price per kilo before ordering.
Swaps and additions
- Bà Nà Hills: a full-day trip by cable car to the hilltop park and the Golden Bridge, held up by two giant stone hands. Cooler air, big crowds. Go on a clear day.
- Rainy day: swap Sơn Trà for the Cham Museum, a cooking class and a Vietnamese coffee crawl.
- With kids: shorter sightseeing blocks, more beach, and a prize wheel spin after breakfast at Oh la la!.
- Food lovers: add a morning of mì Quảng and bún chả cá. Our best breakfast in Da Nang guide tells you what to order.
