Da Nang is hot, bright and full of fruit. Street carts sell cut mango in plastic bags, markets stack dragon fruit in pink pyramids, and coconuts wait with a straw already in. A smoothie bowl is simply the café version of what the whole city already eats: cold fruit, eaten slowly, in the shade.
Why smoothie bowls work so well here
- The heat. From late morning, a cold breakfast feels right.
- The fruit. Most of what goes into a great bowl grows in Vietnam, so it can be ripe instead of shipped.
- The texture. Frozen fruit base, crunchy toppings, a spoon. It is breakfast and dessert at once.
Fruit in season in Da Nang
Seasons shift by region and by year, so treat this as a rough guide:
- Mango (xoài): at its best from roughly March to July. A ripe Vietnamese mango is one of the great tastes of a trip.
- Banana (chuối): all year, in many varieties, from sweet finger bananas to cooking bananas.
- Coconut (dừa): all year. Drink the water, then ask them to open it for the soft flesh.
- Dragon fruit (thanh long): most of the year, with a peak in summer. White or deep pink inside.
- Passion fruit (chanh dây): much of the year. Sharp, fragrant, perfect on top of a bowl.
- Pineapple (dứa or thơm) and watermelon (dưa hấu): easy to find all year.
- Avocado (bơ): mainly from the Central Highlands, roughly from late spring to early autumn. Try sinh tố bơ, the avocado smoothie.
- Strawberries: grown in the cool highlands around Đà Lạt, a long way from the beach heat.
- Mangosteen, rambutan and longan: mostly in summer, many trucked up from the south.
What about acai bowls?
Acai is the berry of an Amazonian palm. In Vietnam it is imported frozen, so acai bowls are rare and usually priced as a luxury. A bowl built on Vietnamese mango or dragon fruit is fresher and, honestly, tastes more like the place you are in. We do not make acai bowls; our bases are banana, strawberry or mango.
How to order juices and smoothies in Vietnamese
- Sinh tố: a blended smoothie, often made with condensed milk and sugar. Say không sữa for no milk.
- Nước ép: pressed juice, no milk.
- Nước dừa: coconut water, often straight from the coconut.
- Ít đường: less sugar. Không đường: no sugar.
- Không đá: no ice.
Where to find fruit in Da Nang
Han Market and Con Market have full fruit sections and cut-fruit stalls. Street carts around An Thượng and along the beach sell ready-cut mango, pineapple and guava, often with chili salt on the side. Ask the price before you buy, and enjoy the bargaining as part of the fun.
The smoothie bowl at Oh la la!
Ours comes with a banana, strawberry or mango base, topped with chia seeds, coconut and cashews. It is vegetarian, and the mango version is the one guests write about most in their reviews. Cashews are nuts, so tell us if you need them left off.
Not in a bowl mood? The Granola and Yogurt Bowl and the Fruit Salad are also vegetarian, and fresh juices are on all day. Before 10:30 the Breakfast Combo pairs toast with a fresh juice for 99,000 VND. We do not publish calorie counts; ask the staff if you need ingredient details.
