Quick answerA Hội An day trip from Da Nang is easy: it is roughly 30 km south, about 45 minutes by car or motorbike and a bit longer by local bus. Leave after an early breakfast, arrive before the midday heat, stay for the lantern-lit evening, then ride back or take a car.

Hội An sits close enough to Da Nang that you can treat it as a day out rather than a journey. The old town, the river, the markets and the surrounding rice fields fit into one long, satisfying day. The trick is timing: leave early, eat properly first, and decide in advance how you want to travel.

How far is it, and how long does it take?

The distance from central Da Nang to Hội An is roughly 30 km. Travel times vary with traffic and the route you take.

  • By car or taxi (Grab): usually 45 to 60 minutes. Comfortable, air conditioned, and easy to split between two or three people.
  • By motorbike: similar timing, depending on how often you stop. The coastal road past the Marble Mountains and the beaches is the scenic option.
  • By local bus: slower and cheaper, often an hour or more, with a walk at the end. Ask your accommodation for the current route and stop.
  • By organised tour: convenient if you want a guide and a fixed schedule, less flexible if you like to wander.

If you are based in An Thượng, you are already on the right side of the city for the road south. Have a look at our An Thượng guide for how the neighbourhood is laid out.

When should you leave Da Nang?

Early. The old town is at its best before the tour groups arrive and before the afternoon heat settles in.

A workable rhythm:

  1. 07:30 to 08:30: breakfast in Da Nang, unhurried.
  2. 08:30 to 09:30: travel south.
  3. 09:30 to 13:00: old town, markets, coffee, a museum or a tailor fitting.
  4. 13:00 to 15:00: lunch and a rest during the hottest hours.
  5. 15:00 to 18:00: river, crafts, cycling in the fields.
  6. After dark: lanterns, dinner, then back to Da Nang.

If you only have one day in the city itself, our one day Da Nang itinerary shows how to fit the Dragon Bridge and the beach around a Hội An trip on another day.

What does the journey actually look like?

Heading south from Da Nang you pass the Marble Mountains, then a stretch of coastline, then inland through rice fields and small towns. The coastal route is prettier; the main road is faster.

A few practical notes:

  • Fuel up before you leave the city if you are on a motorbike.
  • Rain gear lives under the seat for a reason. Weather can turn quickly, so check the forecast at nchmf.gov.vn before you go.
  • Parking in Hội An is usually a paid lot or a designated area a short walk from the old town. Keep the ticket.
  • Bring small notes for parking, drinks and market snacks.

If you are visiting in the wetter months, our guide to Da Nang in November explains how rain tends to behave and how to plan around it.

What is worth doing once you are there?

The old town rewards slow walking. The Japanese Covered Bridge, the assembly halls, the market and the riverside are the obvious anchors, and the lanes between them are the real pleasure.

Beyond the centre:

  • Rent a bicycle and ride into the rice fields and vegetable gardens.
  • Take a short boat trip on the Thu Bồn River, usually best in the late afternoon.
  • Book a tailor fitting early in the day so there is time for a second visit.
  • Stay for the lanterns. The old town is at its most photogenic after sunset, though it is also at its busiest.

Check locally for festival dates, lantern nights and any ticketed old town areas, as schedules change through the year.

What should you eat, and what does it cost?

Hội An has its own dishes: cao lầu, white rose dumplings, chicken rice and fresh seafood by the river. Street stalls and small restaurants are typically the best value.

As a rough guide, local food in this part of Vietnam usually costs from around 30,000 to 70,000 VND for a bowl or a plate at a simple stall, and more at a sit-down restaurant. For a fuller picture of what meals and coffee cost across the city, read our Da Nang food prices guide.

Carry cash. Many small vendors do not take cards.

Should you stay overnight instead?

If your schedule allows, yes. Hội An after dark, and again at dawn before the crowds, is a different town. Our 5 day Da Nang and Hội An itinerary builds in a night there without rushing the rest of the trip.

If you are travelling with children, a slower version of the day works better: fewer stops, more shade, an earlier return. Our Da Nang with kids guide has more on that pace.

Breakfast first, at Oh la la!

The day goes better on a proper breakfast, and Oh la la! on Mai Thúc Lân in An Thượng is a short walk inland from My Khe Beach. It opens every day, usually 08:00 to 18:00.

The Breakfast Combo is 99,000 VND, toast and a fresh juice of your choice, served 08:00 to 10:30 only. That is a neat fit before a 10:00 departure. If you want something bigger, the Avocado Eggs Benedict is 130,000 VND, the English Breakfast is 145,000 VND, and the Signature Seafood Pasta is 145,000 VND for later in the day.

Payment is cash or QR bank transfer. The terrace is open air under a bordeaux awning, sunny and pretty, sometimes loud and hot. When it is full, brunch takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and coffee comes first. Minh, the owner, comes to the tables and sometimes sends over coconut chips. After the meal, ask for a ticket and spin the prize wheel: every spin wins something.

Find the café on Google Maps, see the menu, or follow @ohlala_danang for daily plates. If you are still deciding where to eat, our best breakfast in Da Nang guide covers the wider choice.

Getting back

Return before dark if you are on a motorbike, or later if you have a car. Grab works in Hội An, though availability thins after 21:00, so agree on a pickup point in advance. Give yourself a buffer: the road back into Da Nang can be slow in the evening.
