You land, you are tired, your phone has no data, and someone is offering you a ride at the airport door. The first day in Da Nang does not need to be ambitious, it needs to be smooth. Sort four things in the right order, then spend the rest of the day eating and walking the beach.
This is the checklist we would give a friend landing at Da Nang International Airport, written from An Thượng, the café quarter behind My Khe Beach.
Step 1: Get connected before you leave the airport
Buy a local SIM at the airport or at a shop in the city. Airport counters are convenient and slightly pricier; city shops take a few minutes more but usually give better data packages. Bring your passport, it is normally required for registration.
- Ask for a data package with at least 30GB, most visitors use maps and Grab constantly.
- Test it on the spot: open a map, load a page.
- Keep your home SIM in a small bag, not loose in a pocket.
If you would rather stay offline, download an offline map of Da Nang and Ngũ Hành Sơn district before you fly.
Step 2: Money, and how much cash to carry
Cards work in many hotels and larger restaurants, but cash still runs the day in markets, small eateries and for Grab rides paid in cash. Withdraw from bank ATMs (they display the fee before you confirm) rather than currency exchange counters at the airport.
A practical split: keep a few hundred thousand VND in small notes for food and rides, and the rest tucked away. Local food is inexpensive: a bowl of noodles or a bánh mì is typically tens of thousands of VND, and coffee is similar. For a full picture of what meals cost, read our Da Nang food prices guide.
Step 3: Airport to My Khe Beach
The ride from the airport to My Khe Beach and An Thượng is short, usually 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. Grab is the simplest option: book in the app, the price is shown before you accept, and you do not negotiate. Airport taxis are also available; agree on the meter or a fixed fare before you get in.
A few arrival notes:
- Have your hotel address written in Vietnamese, drivers recognise the local form faster.
- Keep small notes ready if you pay cash.
- Do not accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal.
If you are staying in An Thượng, most of what you need on day one, breakfast, coffee, a minimart, the beach, is within walking distance. Our An Thượng guide maps the quarter properly.
Step 4: Drop the bags and walk to the sand
Check-in is often not until early afternoon, so leave luggage at reception and walk to My Khe Beach. Morning is the best time: the light is softer, locals swim and play volleyball, and the promenade is calm.
Swim only where you see other people and follow the flag system. Red means no swimming, yellow means caution. Conditions change fast, so check the forecast at nchmf.gov.vn and read our My Khe Beach guide for flags, safety and where to eat afterwards.
Step 5: Eat a proper breakfast, slowly
After a flight, the first real meal matters. Da Nang does breakfast well at every price: bánh mì, noodle soups, sticky rice, and full Western plates. Our breakfast guide covers the range, and the local dishes guide explains what to order and how.
Eat before 10:30 if you can. The heat climbs, the streets get busy, and a slow breakfast is the most pleasant thing you will do on day one.
Step 6: A gentle afternoon, then the bridge
Do not overplan. A short rest, a coffee, a walk. If you have energy, the Dragon Bridge breathes fire on weekend evenings, usually Saturday and Sunday around 21:00, but schedules change, so check locally on the day.
Rain is possible in November and December. If the sky turns, our rainy season guide has indoor plans that still feel like a holiday.
Where Oh la la! fits your first morning
Oh la la! sits at 64A Mai Thúc Lân in An Thượng, a short walk inland from My Khe Beach, roughly ten minutes on foot. It opens every day, usually 08:00 to 18:00, and the Breakfast Combo is 99,000 VND from 08:00 to 10:30: toast and a fresh juice of your choice. The Avocado Eggs Benedict is 130,000 VND, the English Breakfast 145,000 VND.
Pay by cash or QR bank transfer. Sit on the open street terrace under the bordeaux awning; it is sunny and pretty, and sometimes loud and hot. When the café is full, brunch takes about 15 to 20 minutes and coffee comes first. Minh, the owner, comes to the tables and sometimes sends over coconut chips. After the meal, ask for a ticket and spin the prize wheel, every spin wins something. Nearly 2,500 Google reviews average 4.9 stars. Find the menu or the map.
